GETTING BETTER WITH TRAINING

SNOA will conduct preseason training to all newer officials with less than 5 years of officiating experience. While the focus is geared towards newer officials, all officials who are in need of training are more than welcome to join. It's important everyone involved to take advantage of an opportunity like this. So officials, be ready and willing to learn and you are guaranteed to leave the gym a better official.

SNOA constantly looks for new and exciting opportunities to assist in the growth of it's officials. These training sessions will be filled with coaches and players you are likely to see throughout the season. Some teams will have a moderate number of team followers who are eager to cheer their team on, so be prepared to preform in front of a crowd. If multiple courts are being used, each court will be monitored with a member of leadership from SNOA. This experience will provide a safe space for officials to learn and grow before the season begins.

These scrimmage sessions are being organized by Coach Tarboro of Sunrise Mountain High School. He's reached out to a number of local high school coaches who were eager to jump aboard. So, if you plan to be apart of this as well, keep in mind that we are all here for the same reason, TO GET BETTER!  To the coaches, thanks for allowing SNOA to utilize your scrimmages for the purpose of training our officials. To the players, because of you, officials can continue to be apart of the game we love. We are looking forward to training along side you.

Training sessions will be conducted by Shawn Rowe. Ed Brown will be in attendance to observe. Preston Clipper and Tom Sawyer will likely stop by from time to time to assist with training as well. Here are a few things you can expect to learn from these sessions:

*Blow your whistle (raised hand with an open palm or closed fist)

*Communication (use your voice to pass information)

*Proper use of signals (practice in the mirror)

*Reporting to the table (use the window method)

*Rotations (switch positions with your partner)

*Positioning (Lead and Trail official)

*Coverage Areas (Primary Vs. Secondary)

*Contact (legal Vs. illegal)

*Fouls and Violations (ruling sequence from start to finish)

*Free-throw Coverage (where to stand and where to look)

*Press Coverage (where to stand and where to look)

*Timeout/Foul reporting area (where to stand)

One of the many purposes of these training sessions is to build a bridge between coaches and officials. Throughout this partnership, we can utilize these scrimmages by communicating with our co-workers who don't wear stripes. Relating to coaches and players can help us better understand certain situation of when hostility enters the game, and unwarranted frustration appear to be emanant. Training yourself to see the build-up is key. Do you wanna know how? I'll show you. Let's go officials, it's time to hit the court!

Coaches + Officials = Teamwork
